As most of you know, Alabama Chanin strives to support local farmers whenever possible—especially now that we’ve opened The Factory Café and are sourcing local and organic ingredients for all of our dishes. Our kitchen manager, Arron, has built a strong relationship with our friends Steve and Connie Carpenter, who operate nearby Jack-O-Lantern Farm. Each week, Steve delivers the freshest local produce to our kitchen, which Arron incorporates into our seasonal menus. Steve also picks up bags our Factory Blend Coffee and house made granola that he then sells at his farm, just across the river. Watching Arron and Steve collaborate these past few months has been a wonderful (and educational) experience.
Jack-O-Lantern Farm is getting ready to launch their 2014 Community-Supported Agriculture box program—and The Factory will be a pick-up location beginning Friday, May 16.
Typically, participating in a CSA program involves purchasing a share of a farmer’s crop before it is produced, but some farmers (like Steve) set up payment plans for pre-ordered boxes. While quantities vary, the amount of food in a CSA box—usually a 1/2 bushel— is designed to feed a family of four for a week.
Not only does buying local put money back into the community’s economy, but the food is fresher, has traveled fewer miles with less negative impact on the environment, and, simply put, just tastes better.
To sign up for Jack-O-Lantern’s 2014 CSA Box Program, follow this link. Choose your pick-up location (The Factory), your share (full or half), add farm-fresh eggs to your box (if you wish), and then pick a payment plan. If you register by April 15 and pay in full, you will receive a 5% discount.
You will be able to pick up your CSA box at the Factory each Friday (beginning May 16), from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Once the shares begin to arrive, you can stop by on Fridays for lunch, and add an array of regional products (that we use and sell at the café) to your CSA box, including our house-blend coffee, The Factory House Made Granola, Georgia Olive Oil, Jack Rudy Small Batch Tonic, and Belle Chevre goat cheese. Come eat lunch, do a little shopping, and get your fresh produce all in one place, while supporting local farming in the Shoals. Order a dozen cookies or savory scones in advance by calling 256.760.1090. Just ask to speak to someone in the café, and we will start preparing your order.
