“In the adjustment of the new order of things, we women demand an equal voice; we shall accept nothing less.” – Carrie Chapman Catt
Since 1987, March has been celebrated as Women’s History Month in the United States. Like so many across the country, we at Alabama Chanin are inspired by the phenomenal lives, works, and legacies of women throughout the history of the United States. In honor of Women’s History Month, we start a month-long series today by taking in-depth looks at such women. In the coming weeks, learn with us as we explore the influential women in the realms of art, literature, music, and activism.
In Alabama: Educator, author, and lifelong friend of Helen Keller, Maud McKnight Lindsay opened the first free kindergarten in Alabama, located in the cotton mill district of East Florence.
