Beside the slightly odd wording of your message, which implies that you are wishing for peace on earth and goodwill to all only until you return the day after Christmas (which I know you didn’t mean), I’m kind of disturbed that you would use an image of Mount Rushmore (at any time of year). The Mount Rushmore Monument was carved into the Black Hills which was sacred land to the Lakota that had basically been stolen by the U.S. government. The first time I ever drove cross-county, on a trip with my college boyfriend, I learned the story of the Lakota and was saddened and disgusted that the faces of four white politicians had been blasted into that beautiful mountainscape. Needless to say, we did not pay the extra $15 (or so) to drive into the observation area, but it was still visible for miles. There are plenty of things about America that are great and inspiring (I love your take on the flag, for example) – isn’t it time we retired Rushmore as an icon of anything other than hypocrisy and shame?
