DIY APRON + TEA TOWELS

If any of you are like me, when preparing food, you end up with at least a modest amount of flour, eggs, or whatever you’ve cooked for dinner all over your clothes. (Close family members also know that I am notorious for dropping food, plates, and glasses.)  Anyone will acknowledge that this is not a good look when you have visitors over for coffee or dinner. I always keep several aprons on hand for myself or for visitors or little ones who want to help in the kitchen.

We also go through an incredible number of towels in our kitchen. Perhaps I’m messier than I’d like to admit (maybe I can blame that on Maggie). It seems that I always have plenty of dishes that need drying or hands that need wiping. These Tea Towels work perfectly as a napkin or a makeshift bib for messy foods, too. They can be sewn up so quickly that I keep the necessary supplies on hand in case I need a hostess gift.

We offer several DIY Home kits for those wanting to update their kitchen or home. The DIY Apron + Tea Towels Kit in our Bloomers pattern has been a popular option in our One-Day Workshops, and is a perfect beginner project for adding a little bit of color to your kitchen, or for gifting.

SUPPLIES

DIY Apron and Tea Towel Kit
Basic sewing supplies: embroidery scissors, pinsneedles, and Alabama Studio Sewing + Design.

Purchase the DIY Kit from our online store. The Apron is a longer, half apron with a long cotton jersey pull around the waist. You will embellish the garment in our Bloomers pattern (shown here) in the colorway of your choice.

You can see that we used random reverse appliqué embroidery along the bottom of the Apron, and worked the Tea Towels in reverse appliqué throughout the design. See Alabama Studio Sewing + Design for instructions on the reverse appliqué technique.

Once your embellishment and embroidery are complete, secure the extra-long cotton jersey pulls to the top of the apron by securely tacking the end of the pull to the inside of each side of the apron.
