ALABAMA CHANIN – BUILD A WARDROBE 2018

2018 BUILD A WARDROBE

Build a Wardrobe is now officially two years old, and, we’ve seen our maker community take the new patterns and turn them into wardrobe staples and statement pieces and continually add on to their sustainable wardrobes. Because of the positive feedback we’ve received and the continued support for the program, we’re happy to announce that Build a Wardrobe will continue for another year—updated with fresh, modern silhouettes suitable for many different ages and body types.

When you subscribe, you will have a year’s worth of content in-store that can be created from start-to-finish using techniques presented in The School of Making Book Series. As always, each quarter will bring a new DIY garment pattern that you can customize to fit your own personal style. Subscribers will still receive a printed pattern, instructions, and the fabric and notions needed to make basic versions of each garment in their chosen colors. (And you’ll still receive a digital pattern in case something happens to your hard copy.) This program offers participants full freedom to take each garment and make it their own.

Subscribers will also have access to order custom DIY kits for each of the four new garment patterns at a discounted rate. These new styles are exclusively available as DIY kits to subscribers during the 2018 Build a Wardrobe program. As we’ve done the past two years, subscribers can order custom kits beginning with the Panel Tank—offered in four lengths—during the first quarter of 2018, with the new patterns being added every quarter.

When you purchase your membership to Build a Wardrobe, you receive:

  • Digital inspiration and information packet of garment and treatment ideas for your wardrobe
  • Digital link to a form where you will choose your fabric and thread colors for the year
  • Discount coupon for 25% off stenciling supplies for those who want to stencil their garments (one-time use)
  • Subscription to an exclusive quarterly Build a Wardrobe newsletter

Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns is the ultimate guide for altering patterns and perfecting individual fit. The rest of The School of Making Book Series provides excellent resources for embellishing these four basic garments to created one-of-a-kind wardrobe essentials.

As with most of our patterns, each of these new styles is created with multiple length or style variations—allowing each person to choose the version that best fits their personal figure best.

We chose patterns for the year to build on both the 2016 and 2017 subscriptions. If you make a basic of each variation of every pattern offered through this year’s subscription, you can end the year with 27 hand-sewn garments. Pattern possibilities, by the numbers:

Panel Tank – 4 garments (tank, tunic, knee-length dress, and long dress)

Palazzo Pant – 3 garments (shorts, crop, and long pants)

Frances Top – 12 garments (3 body variations X 2 sleeve variations X 2 neckline variations)

Ezra Coat – 8 garments (4 length variations X 2 sleeve variations)

I am really considering doing this–one question. Is the Ezra coat pattern out now or will the pattern itself be released in October 2018? I hope it is available now because I adore it! Thanks.

      Hi Alice,
We’re so glad to hear that you like the Ezra Coat. However, the pattern itself will not be released until the first week of October. The Panel Tank pattern will be available on January 4th.

Let us know if you have any additional questions. Happy sewing!

Can you provide any details on the quarterly Build a Wardrobe newsletter?
    -Some examples of content
    -How many pages
-Images and text, or text only?
-Any other details you can share?

    Thanks.

      Hi Cindy,
Examples of content from the Build a Wardrobe newsletters would be tips and tricks for making your garment, a brief history of the pattern for that quarter, inspiration garments and design choices, and modifications that can be made to change up your pattern and make it even more versatile. It changes quarter to quarter depending on the pattern and information available. Both images and text are included in the emailer, so all of the content is on one page.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

I love that you are continuing Build A Wardrobe into 2018. I have so enjoyed making the patterns I’ve downloaded and can’t wait for these; in particular the palazzo pants and the coat. C’mon 2018!

I’m so excited about the Frances top and dress. I have been hoping that it would appear as a pattern at some point! Now to be patient until the fall…

So happy for this third year of Build an wardrobe. Is it possible to add sleeves to the Panel Tank without making any adjustment to the armholes ?

      Hi Anne,

It could be done but not without making significant changes to the pattern itself, so we do not recommend adding a sleeve to the Panel Tank. The strap is narrow and sits on the outside of the shoulder, and the front and back necklines are so low that it would be difficult to construct a sleeve that wouldn’t pull the garment off of your shoulder. This tank looks great layered over one of our Rib Turtlenecks or under a Cropped Cardigan. We hope that you can find a way to make the pattern work for you as it is very flattering on all figures. Happy sewing!

This year’s collection is fabulous! I want to make all the things! All four patterns are very beautiful but I must say that the Ezra Coat is absolutely breathtaking. I love the version with the inset appliquéd panel shown in the photo at the top of the article. This piece is totally worth the wait until next October to buy the individual pattern. <3 <3 <3

I love all the patterns especially the panel tank. I wanted to know if there is anyone from Austin so I could meet them once a month to do it. I’m planning to join end of January.
