As we reflect back on the year behind us, we have also been looking forward to the year ahead. Our workshops were planned months ago to allow time to make travel arrangements, and our collections have been in development with our design team over the whole of 2018. We’re glad that you’re here for our continuing journey.  Here’s a bit of what’s on the roster in 2019. Get ready.

The first quarter

Look for the next evolution of the Alabama Chanin Collection in mid-January as we launch a resort line with bright blues to liven up the winter months. In the meantime, find our last chance styles here.

The School of Making’s first quarter Build a Wardrobe pattern, The Fractal Dress, launches this Thursday with top, crossover top, and dress variations. And the DIY Sewing Kit Collection gets a refresh with new kit styles in late January.

Starting on January 8th, The Factory Store + Café will have new hours and be open Tuesday – Friday from 10am – 5pm and on Saturday from 10am – 2pm. Saturday brunch is an ongoing weekend staple and look for new treats and surprises in the café cooler during the weekdays.

And while The Factory Café has changes to daily lunch service, groups of 10 or more will be able to order from a pre-arranged menu, which means our First and Third Tuesdays sewing group will receive an email prior to our meetup days. Guests will be able to opt-in for lunch in advance. If you aren’t on our First and Third Tuesday mailing list, contact

On January 10th, The Factory Café hosts a Supper Club with chef Ramone Jacobsen of Odette. This event is sold out, but call 256-701-8667 or email events(at) to be added to the waitlist. (Look for more dinner announcements next week.)

In February, we invite our Shoals community to participate in a six-week continuing education sewing class through the University of North Alabama. Register here for the series of two-hour classes.

For more sewing education, The School of Making team will be at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment on Saturday, February 16th for a special T-Shirt Workshop.

March begins with an update to the Alabama Chanin Collection, as we anticipate a new season.

The first Intro to Hand-Sewing Workshop will be held at The Factory on Friday, March 15th.

The second quarter

April kicks off with the second pattern release from The School of Making. The Jumpsuit pattern will be available as part of our Build a Wardrobe program and offers versatility to make a shirt, shirt dress, or jumpsuit—and with a bonus pocket pattern.

We draw from inspiration in our community, and the Shoals tells a deep and rich history of music. Look for a special music-inspired Collection in mid-April.

April is a big month at The Factory with two big events: our annual community picnic, The Gathering, and a special symposium for Project Threadways. Go ahead and mark your calendars for The Gathering which will take place from April 11th – 13th with a series of workshops, meals, special guests, and events at The Factory.

The Factory Café will host their first Friends of the Café Dinner during the Project Threadways Symposium on Thursday, April 25th. (Look for an announcement next week.)

The School of Making hosts its popular Three-Day Workshop at The Factory from May 16th – 18th.

And before you know it, summer will be here.

Look for new Clean Tee styles in early summer, as Bldg. 14 plans to grow the style offerings for our unisex t-shirts.

June starts with our Classic Studio Week Workshop at The Factory from June 3rd – 7th. This is the only week-long workshop we offer each year. It does tend to sell out—so make your summer plans and reserve a spot soon.

The third quarter

We’ll cool off in the summer with updates to our Leisure collection.

The Asymmetrical Trench pattern launches in Build a Wardrobe, allowing time to make a winter coat.

A second Intro to Hand-Sewing Workshop from The School of Making takes place on Friday, August 16th. Make sure to complete your summer vacation bucket list with a visit to The Factory.

We’ll finish out the summer with The Factory Café’s annual Friends of the Café Dinner at the end of August. (Look for an announcement next week.)

And the Alabama Chanin Collection will transition in August and September to an updated collection for the fall.

The fourth quarter

The School of Making’s final pattern of 2019 Build a Wardrobe is the Pencil Skirt, a modern, feminine silhouette offered in multiple variations.

The School of Making only One-Day Embroidery Workshop takes place on Friday, October 11th. This workshop models itself after the techniques shown in The Geometry of Hand-Sewing, Natalie’s latest book.

Cozy up in new Leisure updates in time for cooler weather and holiday gifting.

As the year closes out, The School of Making will host its last Three-Day Workshop from November 7th – 9th.

Then Natalie travels to Nashville on Saturday, December 6th to teach a One-Day Sewing Workshop at CraftSouth.

And before we know it, we’re looking back at the year behind us a looking ahead at what’s to come. 2020 marks 20 years of Alabama Chanin so buckle your seatbelts.

This is an overview of everything we’ve planned so far for 2019—expect more events, launches, collaborations, partnerships, and surprises throughout the year. Here’s to an incredible 2019!
