Autumn: the end of summer, as daylight becomes shorter and temperatures begin to cool. The word “autumn” came into favor in the late fourteenth century with the usage of “automne” in Old French, derived from the Latin word “autumnus.” English poet John Keats wrote about the season and its bounty ,” in his final poem, To Autumn:

            “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run…”
