The School of Making was founded on the ideas of cultural preservation of education and the living arts. Workshops are one of our many platforms for the exchange of ideas, maker skills, supply chain transparency, and education.
We invite you to be a part of the growing movement and join us at The Factory or virtually for a unique learning experience with our team.
Today, we’re announcing a variety of new workshops for 2021, hosted at The Factory and tailored to all skills levels. Learn about each of them below.

Our Embroidery Workshop includes a discussion of the physics of sewing, embroidery stitches, and an overview of garment construction and other sewing techniques. Work with The School of Making team to create a hand-sewn project. The project selections will focus on variegated striped kits that focus on exploring various embroidery techniques. Participants will learn to use the die-cut grids in The Geometry of Hand-Sewing to practice and develop their embroideries. These reusable cards can be stitched through for practicing or used as stencils for transferring grids to fabric. This workshop is suited to beginners and experienced sewers alike. Cost includes materials, instruction, lunch, stories, and laughter.
This workshop highlights Alabama Studio Sewing Patterns and focuses on how to take measurements, create a customized sloper using our T-shirt pattern and Drawstring Pant pattern, make alterations to existing The School of Making patterns, and reviews how to create and adjust commercial garment patterns for cotton jersey. The Physics of Sewing and The School of Making Construction lessons help participants understand best practices when working with cotton jersey, and with hand-embroidery techniques from The School of Making.
Cost includes materials, access to a selection of garment patterns and stencils available in our book series, instruction, special promotions, daily breakfast and weekday lunches, studio access daily from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, and a few surprises along the way.
