a field of cotton—
as if the moon
had flowered
— “a field of cotton”, a haiku by Matsuo Basho

Cotton is at the heart of our business. It is rooted in our history, and it shapes the future of our work at Alabama Chanin. From Natalie’s beginnings of cutting up a t-shirt and sewing it back together again, to our current offerings of organic medium-weight, lightweight, waffle, and rib-knit cotton, Alabama Chanin and The School of Making have spent the better part of two decades devoted to using the most sustainable materials in the most responsible and transparent ways.

This week, following Earth Day, we explore cotton more in-depth through posts from our own Journal archives and share resources from other organizations and individuals working in and around sustainable cotton. We encourage you to share links to organizations and individuals supporting these initiatives in the comments of this post.
