INSPIRATION: JULY’S SWATCH OF THE MONTH

Clockwise: Fabric Swatch in Ballet/Ballet with Latticework Passementerie and Herringbone Stitching; Passementerie-inspired dress from the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2015 RTW collection; “Miscellaneous Shroud Knots (Plates 69–90)” from Encyclopedia of Knots and Fancy Rope Work, 1939 by John Hensel and Raoul Graumont; July 2022 Swatch of the Month detail featuring Latticework Passementerie and Herringbone Stitching on Navy Medium-Weight Cotton Jersey; “Booklet of Embroidery and Drawnwork,” early 17th century, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Studio Bundle #2 from The School of Making.

Inspiration for July’s Swatch of the Month, featuring Latticework Passementerie with Herringbone Stitching.

In Alabama Studio Sewing and Design, Natalie describes Passementerie as ”the French term for (often handmade) ornamental edging or trim made from braided yarns, cords, and threads.”

Passementerie can be added to any garment using fabric scraps and instructions from July’s exclusive newsletter. Explore subscription options here (and watch for a new Passementerie DIY Kit arriving next week).

I love how Alabama Chanin inspires, shares, and teaches the art of slow stitching and textile history. Ms. Chanin and her team elevates the community through a dedication to history and pure, beautiful esthetic. I am definitely a fan and a big-time “wanna be” textile artist. Thank you!
